I was a Data Analytics intern at BDO Ghana (formerly SCG Audit). Data analytics has become essential to modern audit work, and I was excited to develop expertise in this space while contributing to the firm's audit delivery.
About Me
I am Daniel Adamah with a degree in actuarial science, and I completed my national service in SSNIT's Actuarial department. Since then, I taught myself data analysis skills such as SQL and Power BI using online resources. When I joined BDO Ghana in November 2021, these skills proved invaluable as I transitioned into the role.
Relationships
Walking into BDO Ghana, I was welcomed warmly and felt at home almost immediately. The managers and seniors related freely with all employees, and I found it easy to voice opinions and flag work issues without hesitation. This positive environment was transformative. My communication skills were sharpened, and I learned to balance independent work with effective collaboration. Working at BDO Ghana taught me the value of strong relationships in advancing one’s career.
Learning
BDO Ghana takes employee development seriously. I participated in targeted training programs that accelerated my learning curve. I' became proficient in MindBridge, an AI-powered analytics platform that helps auditors assess risk more systematically. Working alongside experienced auditors, I was able to use MindBridge and data analytics to support risk assessment, sample selection, and test procedures across audit engagements.
This hands-on exposure strengthened my technical skills in data cleaning, visualization, data management, and data security. More importantly, I gained a practical understanding of how auditing functions and learned the fundamentals of accounting from experienced professionals.
Career Development
The firm encourages intentional career planning. There is a saying in the office: "If you don't know where you're going, any road can take you there." That philosophy drove how I thought about my own path. I was given room to make mistakes, learn from them, and improve. This instilled confidence that I could shape my career deliberately rather than drift through it.
My aspiration was to move into finance and analytics roles where I would apply both accounting knowledge and technical analytics skills. The foundation I built at BDO Ghana positioned me to do that effectively.
